Lumbee River EMC Employees' Quick Action Saves Life

In a heartwarming display of professionalism and quick thinking, Lumbee River EMC employees recently saved the life of an individual who suffered from cardiac arrest while shopping at Forest Acres Grocery in Lumberton.

According to eyewitness accounts, the adult male collapsed in the store and was unresponsive. Fortunately, five Lumbee River EMC personnel - Timmy Mendoza, Jason Lowery, Donnie Hammonds, Cranston Lowery, and Earl Woods - were entering the store for their lunch break at the time of the incident. They immediately sprang into action, recognizing the severity of the situation.

Without hesitation, the team applied their CPR training, administering chest compressions to keep the patient's heart beating until medical professionals arrived on the scene. They also secured an automatic external defibrillator (AED) from one of their vehicles and used it correctly, following proper protocol for cardiac arrest situations.

The timely intervention by Lumbee River EMC employees was instrumental in saving the man's life. 'They were definitely the right people at the right time,' said Director of Corporate Safety Mark Walters. 'These men saw the situation and took appropriate action, possibly saving this person's life.'

Robert Ivey, commander of Lumberton Rescue and EMS, expressed his gratitude to Lumbee River EMC employees in a letter, stating that their quick action made all the difference in the outcome of the event. The patient was transported to UNC Southeastern hospital with return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), indicating that the AED had successfully restored his heart's natural rhythm.

The incident serves as a testament to the importance of proper training and teamwork. Lumbee River EMC promotes a culture of safety, providing CPR and AED certification for all employees every two years. The utility company should be proud to have employees like these on their staff.

'It is training we hope employees will never have to use, but if a situation arises, our team will be ready,' Director Walters emphasized. Mendoza, the team leader and general foreman, echoed this sentiment, saying, 'You really don't know what you'll do when faced with a situation like that. But my guys stayed calm and did what we had been trained to do.'
